Maybe from their point of view, there wasn't anything wrong with it. It wouldn't have been much trouble to put a smiley face on the kid if, and that's a big if especially in '73, the kid was supposed to be looking away from the priest's crotch.
Really looks like they were rubbing our faces in it, doesn't it?
And they wonder why they have a bad image.
