Mr Harvey is the owner of a department store chain here in Australia called "Harvey Norman". Currently goods purchased online from overseas websites which are worth less than $1000 are exempt from our Goods and Services Tax (GST). Mr Harvey, along with at least two other billionaires, has started a campaign in Australia against online purchases, saying that people who buy goods online are "un-Australian", and that the GST should be applied to all items under $1000. Harvey Norman, along with the other businesses complaining are at the more expensive (and some would say over-priced) end of the retail market. Even with the addition of the 10%, the price of items online is still significantly cheaper than in these stores.
It would be safe to say he has completely misread the Australian public, and there has been a massive public backlash. If you are interested you can read about it here and here.
my hubby works for harvey's stores out here in Ireland. harvey is a wanker and does everything in his power to make sure the employees get paid dick.
ReplyDeleteI'm not surprised - the only person Gerry cares about is Gerry.
