Gerry Harvey, Ripoff

Mr Harvey is the owner of a department store chain here in Australia called "Harvey Norman".  Currently goods purchased online from overseas websites which are worth less than $1000 are exempt from our Goods and Services Tax (GST).   Mr Harvey, along with at least two other billionaires, has started a campaign in Australia against online purchases, saying that people who buy goods online are "un-Australian", and that the GST should be applied to all items under $1000.  Harvey Norman, along with the other businesses complaining are at the more expensive (and some would say over-priced) end of the retail market.  Even with the addition of the 10%, the price of items online is still significantly cheaper than in these stores.
It would be safe to say he has completely misread the Australian public, and there has been a massive public backlash.  If you are interested you can read about it here and here.

Dear Australians: Boycott Harvey Norman

Gerry Harvey seems to believe that Australian consumers are here to serve him and line his pockets.
People don't buy goods online because they save the 10% GST. They buy them online because they are significantly cheaper. It is not "un-Australian" to want to get the best deal possible.

Thanks to the Internet we are now an educated populace, and we know we do not need to pay exorbitant prices, there are other options.

Gerry Harvey needs to learn that the customer is always right, and we will choose to save money by not making him richer.
Rather than giving more money to Gerry, spend your money here and show him how you feel:

Forward this to your friends and lets all stand up for our rights as consumers.
